Timing is everything and we’ve been on a tear since leaving Nashville. The plan was to get as far north as prudent, yet not into the blast freezer and tuck in after the polar vortex had its way with the north east. All signs point to success…The first night was Statesville, NC A park with a pond and lit fountain.
Last night we upped the ante by going to College Park Maryland which is north of Washington DC. Just after hooking up everything at this “RV Park” (which was more like a Disneyland theme park) and settling in the snow flakes started falling…
Did we make the right call?…
When the 5 AM alarm went off, we both rolled over and looked at the internal/external temperature monitor. Inside it was 51, outside 31. She pressed to button to get the 24 hour low…24 degrees… then turned to me and said…”Did it stick?”
Looking out the window, clear with no snow. Bonus! Lets roll, next stop Wilderness Lake Park in Willington, CT.
Getting there…we circled around Baltimore, headed north to Harrisburg, across to Scranton and into Connecticut.
Let me say up front I’ve driven in most major cities and am pretty tolerant of driving ignorance but *these* drivers really need to go back to some 12 step remedial program. They suck in at least 13 dimensions and confirm every gender/racial/ethnic/automobile driving stereotype ever spoken or unspoken. Did I say they sucked! Jeez!
One high point on the way was Hershey PA. Barb had claimed for years that the street lights were shaped like “Kisses”…Since it was on the way, why not?
Here’s why…Snow..
Nothing was running, the factory tour was shut down due to upgrading equipment, all-in-all the detour was a total bust. So back onto the 84 with all the inmates.
Crossing over the Hudson we experienced our first toll road in New York State. Up until this point the roads had been like all roads some good others bad. Paying $10 bucks I figured we’d be getting the good end of the spectrum. Fool I was. I don’t know what they use the money for but it ain’t the road. It was as bad as going to Hana. Koko was not pleased…neither was the lap in which she was sitting…
Danbury, Waterbury, Hartford…northbound was tough enough but nothing like southbound on a Sunday afternoon with all the drones headed back into the Big Apple after a weekend in the country. Wilderness Lake Park couldn’t come soon enough.
Pulling off the 84 and wending our way into the relative wilderness to the address we began to wonder…Did you hear banjo music? We were just about ready to turn around and go back to the nearest Sam’s Club parking lot when we found the sign…
Idyllic would be the word. Ample reward for the day’s trouble. After dinner I couldn’t resist taking just one more picture of this tranquil place.

Tomorrow we press on at a more leisurely time and pace…I do think the weather is behind us…for the time being.

I’m glad you made it through the gauntlet!! When I saw your mention of Walden Pond, I asked myself ” how many will know what it was that Henry was writing about!?” One table,Two chairs, all the rest is vanity! Loved the pic of Barb in the laundry mat, brought a tear to my eye! Safe travels and sunshine for the duration of your trip! C.R.
